Glorious and free

Yesterday our nation celebrated Canada Day; our newsletter focus is on freedom and justice in this country. How do they look? Better this week than last.

A score for religious freedom, says Barbara Kay for the National Post. Who should decide the kind of religious and moral instruction children receive in school? Quebec said it’s the state, but a Quebec Superior Court judge said otherwise.

Also, the Child Trafficking Bill has overcome its final hurdle toward becoming law. The new law will provide a minimum sentence of five years imprisonment for anyone convicted of trafficking a minor in Canada.

That is welcome news. Canada has been named a source, transit, and destination for human trafficking and child sex tourism. Human trafficking is the world's third largest criminal industry and fastest growing, according to Jamie MacIntosh, founder of International Justice Mission (IJM). His ministry intercepts human trafficking and brings perpetrators to justice. He tells stories of how he finds and rescues young girls from predators. We too can help, says Lisa Hall Wilson. She gives ideas what to do and who to connect with to get things done.

Our founding fathers envisioned justice and freedom undergirding our nation. Since these values also feature prominently in Scripture, they should be important to us says Jamie MacIntosh. Dr. Joseph Askin, chair of the Freedom of Conscience Committee of Christian Medical and Dental Society, looks at our responsibility as Christians to uphold justice and freedom from a biblical perspective.

God keep our land glorious and free! May God answer the prayers built right into our own national anthem:

         Ruler supreme, who hearest humble prayer,
         Hold our Dominion in thy loving care;
         Help us to find, O God, in thee
         A lasting, rich reward,
         As waiting for the better Day,
         We ever stand on guard.

Blessings,
