Homelessness - too close to home

Poverty Shouldn't be a Life Sentence, reads the headline of a recent study conducted by the Salvation Army. The findings indicate that homelessness is not a distant affliction of a “marginalized few” as some may think. The study reveals a stunning statistic that one in nine Canadians have either experienced or come close to experiencing homelessness.

The Salvation Army is one of many Canadian Christian charities that provides significant assistance the homeless, but its efforts are now hampered. Not only is the Army, but many Christian charities are experiencing acute shortfalls in income as a result of the economic downturn and the flow of donations toward other immediate needs, such as the relief effort in Haiti. Because of cutbacks and loss of employment, many families are now struggling financially. Kim Perrone offers ideas to parents on how to motivate the whole family – including the kids – to trim spending through frugal living.

Mission and outreach are the expression of our faith in Christ. We can’t live without them. In the recent Faith Today magazine, Karen Stiller writes about Canadian missions just in one nation alone – Tanzania. The list of Canadian Christian organizations supporting work in that country alone is truly amazing.

On a smaller scale, Lambrick Park Church in Victoria, B.C., has found a new approach to mission and outreach. Church members see themselves and their mission differently after consulting with the executive director of Canadian Food for the Hungry. Their renewed vision has affected not only their outreach overseas, but also their ministry within their community.

These are just some of our selections this week. For more, please visit our homepage, and enjoy your reading.
