Merry Christmas

When the weather outside is frightful, inside it can be cozy and warm. It’s time to adjust the thermostat to love, joy and peace, writes columnist Diane Exner.

It’s also time to step back from the frantic pace of life and focus on the hearts of others, especially strangers. But apparently loving strangers doesn’t come naturally to “homo sapiens,” according to a Banner article. How, then, does one acquire philoxenia – a love for strangers? “That’s worth thinking about at Christmastime when we hope the great story of ‘God so loved the world’ will teach the great lesson ‘Love one another; love others,”’ says the writer, John Roozeboom.

Tim Dyck, publisher of Canadian Mennonite, recounts an inspiring legend that offers deeper insight into the mystery of the transformation necessary to love others. This age-old secret changed the lives of monks at a failing monastery, and it can change our lives too.

It seems Edmonton’s Community of Hope church has discovered this secret. Every year they reach out with love to single moms who generally use the little money they have to bless their children at Christmastime. “We give the moms one day of sunshine,” says the organizer of the event.

This Christmas you too may want to reach out to someone in a different way — a way that can transform a life. World Vision and The Evangelical Fellowship of Canada offer some last-minute gift-giving options that might appeal to you.

As you prepare for your Christmas celebrations, we invite you to read and enjoy the inspirational selections above as well as additional articles below. Our offices will be closed for the Christmas and the New Year’s seasons. We’ll connect with you again on January 9!

The Evangelical Fellowship of Canada and wish you.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
