Youth 101
How can we best inspire youth to participate in the life and work of the church? It begins with relationship.

“And the wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them” (Isaiah 11:6).

If there’s one constant for Millennials, it’s change. Today’s youth are inheriting a world that’s constantly changing and shaped daily by global influences.

… today’s young people are often two steps ahead of the rest of us.

Sometimes, ministering to youth can feel like playing catch up. Raised in the midst of rapid social, political, economic and technological change, today’s young people are often two steps ahead of the rest of us. Isaiah saw a child as a symbol of hope. How can we best inspire youth to participate in the life and work of the church? It begins with relationship. Consider these 10 relationship-building ideas:

  1. Spend time with them
  2. Listen to them
  3. Ask them about their ideas, interests, issues and concerns
  4. Be open-minded
  5. Curb the tendency to have all the answers
  6. Encourage their ideas
  7. Involve them in the decision-making process
  8. Take the time and trouble to explore and understand their world and technologies
  9. Nurture their youthful idealism, passion and energy
  10. Train and equip them to act on their ideas
