More Than Just Turkey!

It’s Thanksgiving! What could be more appropriate than to thank God for our wonderful country – a country founded for the sake of God’s kingdom?

When our founding fathers named Canada, they hoped we would "as a people" accept the peaceful dominion of Jesus Christ from sea to sea and from the St. Lawrence north to the “last inhabited islands of the earth,” says Doug Matacio, the chair of religious studies at Canadian University College. He looks at how our nation has fared spiritually since that time.

One of our distinctives, of course, has been our diversity. Canada is built on immigration. We can be thankful that the freedom we enjoy is attractive to immigrants and that they choose to come. Could God be up to something? asks The Salvation Army’s Major Ray Harris. He wonders if perhaps as Christians we are called to understand our own identity clearly so we can welcome people of other backgrounds to Canada. He proposes a “theology of immigration.”

The Church has a significant role to play in welcoming immigrants. Nino, an immigrant from Columbia says, “I give thanks to God for allowing me to be integrated in [this] marvellous [Canadian] faith community.” He found friendship and assistance at an Edmonton outreach centre that helps immigrants become established in their new community.

With the upcoming election, we can also be thankful that we have a say in the governance of this country. What matters most? First of all, that we exercise our freedom to vote, and second, that “we think Christianly about the issues involved” as we vote (ChristianWeek).

So Thanksgiving is more than turkey, says Major Kathy Chiu, also with The Salvation Army. “It comes around once a year to remind us of all the things we take for granted the other 364 days,” and it also gives us an opportunity to teach our children to be thankful for God's blessings.

We invite you to enjoy the above articles, and scroll down for more. Happy Thanksgiving!
