How to Pray for the Election
The 2008 Federal Election is drawing near. Your prayers make a difference. Here’s how to pray for our nation and its leaders and what to pray.

Imagine the impact on Canada if every elected representative at every level of government in this nation was prayed for every day of the year!

Imagine the impact on the quality of decisions made, on our communities and our land if every elected representative in each province, territory and municipality experienced the power of prayer every day.

We believe that every believer has the potential to transform Canada through the power of the Holy Spirit which is released in every prayer for our leaders and our nation.

So, welcome, as you now join in transforming this nation through prayer...

Getting involved

There are many ways you can be involved in transforming our nation through prayer:

  • Pray regularly for your elected representatives at every level – federal, provincial and municipal. Every prayer can be an invitation to the Holy Spirit to act in and through elected representatives according to the will and wisdom of God.
  • Be a spark, and join with others in praying for elected representatives.
  • Organize prayer events at your church.
  • Ask individuals to volunteer to pray regularly for specific elected representatives so that every elected representative is prayed for every day of the year.
  • Organize a community-wide prayer event.
  • Pray with your elected representatives remembering to:
    a. Maintain strict confidentiality.
    b. Respect their schedules: Be on time and keep meetings brief.
    c. Focus on them and their needs: Pray according to the prayer guide below.
    d. Take no more than one other person to the meeting.
  • Write to your elected representatives to let them know:
    a. You encourage them as willing servants of the people
    b. You are praying for them.
    c. If, and when, your church prayed for them.

Effective prayer

Take time to evaluate your relationship with God.

  1. God listens when we pray.
  2. Understand prayer is not a ritual – it involves a personal relationship with God; it is simply talking to God.
  3. Realize why you should pray.
  • To glorify God
  • We are commanded to pray
  • God delights in our prayers
  • Prayer brings results; it invites God to act and calls forth His power and might
  • Be sure you are controlled and empowered by the Holy Spirit, who enables a believer to pray effectively
  • The Holy Spirit is given to us to glorify Christ and to lead into all truth The Holy Spirit empowers us for effective prayer

Use the "ACTS" formula as a guide.

  1. A – Adoration of who God is, expressing our complete trust in Him and the confidence that He hears us.
  2. C – Confession of sin; being real and honest but not extremely introspective, accepting God's forgiveness.
  3. T – Thanksgiving for the many blessings God has given us and thanksgiving for the difficulties and trials, knowing He is in control.
    • Thank God for our country and for those who serve us in public office
    • Thank Him for our freedom to worship
    • Thank Him for the fact that we have choices during the election process
  4. S – Supplication – Pray in specific terms.
    • See the prayer guide below and pray through the list
    • Pray for your federal, provincial and municipal elected representatives
