An Appropriate Response to the Da Vinci Code

The Da Vinci Code opens in theatres today! Why so much fuss over a historically inaccurate and at best "mediocre" piece of writing asks television critic, Vinay Menon (see the article below, The True Da Vinci Mystery).

Many Christian leaders are calling for a boycott of the movie, and some are doing more than that. Catholic Church leaders are contemplating suing Dan Brown. Actress Audrey Tautou, co-star in The Da Vinci Code, is surprised at the reactions and says critics should remember that the work is only entertainment based on fiction (see below, Da Vinci Code Actors Dismiss Religious Criticism).

But what is an appropriate Christian response? "Doing nothing in the face of such a popular challenge to the faith is not an option. Christians who feel threatened by The Da Vinci Code must act," says columnist Lorne Gunter. He suggests there are ways for Christians to respond that are much more effective than suing (see below, Don't Ask the State to Protect the Faith). The Evangelical Fellowship of Canada's (EFC's) magazine, Faith Today, also looks at ways Christians can respond. The author of Using The Da Vinci Code for Christ (see below) says the controversial movie that rewrites historical truths about Jesus can provide unique faith-sharing opportunities.

Also in the news lately is euthanasia. Parliament is preparing to resume the debate on a bill to legalize euthanasia, and the EFC's president Bruce Clemenger is encouraging Christians "to stand with the vulnerable" (see below, Evangelical Fellowship of Canada Encourages Pro-Life Action—March for Life). Meanwhile Dr. Margaret Somerville says that even those who do not take a biblical perspective on euthanasia can make a good case against it (see below, Two Views on Euthanasia). In this article professor Arthur Schafer (University of Manitoba) also presents a counterargument from a humanistic perspective.

Please take a moment to check out the other great selections below, and have a great long weekend!
