A "Ghost" Story More Gripping than Fiction

Just like for Ashley—your dream can become your reality. Faced with an enormous handicap—the loss of her legs below the knees and her arms below the elbows, she became a marathon swimmer. This young woman's courage offers us a metaphor for the life of a follower of Jesus. It reminds us that great things can happen when you hear your heart and follow the dream that God has planted in you.

Are you in a church that dreams of playing an effective role in ministry and mission? Mark Naylor of Trinity Western University offers leaders some excellent print and internet resources. For an example of such a transformation, read the story of a small Baptist church in a culturally diverse community whose pastor had a dream of embracing the diverse population within the church's fellowship. Morningstar church is now a thriving, intentionally intercultural ministry in the heart of Toronto.

Wendy had a dream too. She wanted to make a difference in the world, but didn't know how. Who but God could have turned her longing into an international ministry overnight? Since the time Wendy Hagar said "yes" to God, she has been more than "sew" busy! Her outreach to the homeless, orphans, and widows has touched tens of thousands of lives.

Jesus said that the needy will always be with us, but as we rush about our daily lives, we are often isolated from them. Recently the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada's (EFC) director of public policy, Douglas Cryer, discovered personally what that means. Shaken with what he saw on a guided tour of the streets of Toronto, but overwhelmed with what God can do, he asks, if Jesus were here, what would he say to the lost and to those who are redeeming the streets?

It is true that wherever we look in this country, evangelicals are reflecting the ethnic, linguistic, cultural, and political diversity of Canada, and they are making positive contributions to all walks of life. For this reason, says the EFC's president, Bruce Clemenger, it's good to hear them defended in the press. Often, however, they are maligned unjustly. How do we respond to our detractors? Dr. Margaret Somerville's article Unfair Attack serves as an example of how Christians and social conservatives can respond truthfully and graciously to opposition.

And finally, as we approach the end of October, yet again we must consider how to handle Halloween. Many Christians are deeply troubled by the roots of this celebration. Yet it compels us to reflect on the tangible reality of spiritual darkness in the world—that the goblins and ghouls of "ghost" stories aren't necessarily products of our imaginations. Read a Holy Ghost story that is much more gripping than fiction. And don't fear—it powerfully demonstrates the Scripture "Greater is he who is in us than he who is in the world."
