Not by Might, Nor by Power...

Isn’t it interesting that the Latin motto on the Order of Canada is taken from Hebrews 11:16?  In Latin it reads desiderantes meliorem patriam, meaning “they desire a better country” (Wikipedia). The Order of Canada is “the highest honour within the Canadian system of honours, with membership awarded to those who exemplify the order’s motto.”

On July 1 Dr. Henry Morgentaler was named a recipient of the Order of Canada. It was a very sad day, says Bruce J. Clemenger, president of The Evangelical Fellowship of Canada (EFC). The EFC published a public statement printed in both the National Post and the Ottawa Citizen. “By giving this award, the narrow interests of some and the misguided judgment of others have diminished Canada’s highest civilian honour,” he says.

Abortion is a divisive issue, says National Post’s Barbara Kay, and too many Canadians feel it is never an option (see also the related article, Nothing to Celebrate). Among those many would agree that Dr. Morgentaler’s contribution does not make Canada “a better country.”  Some are even returning their Orders of Canada in protest.

This is one among many issues of interest to Canadian Christians at the present time. Another is that of religious freedom. Janet Epp Buckingham, the director of Trinity Western’s Laurentian Leadership Centre in Ottawa, reminds us of the warning by Christians that redefining marriage would raise continual legal challenges that would whittle away at our religious freedom. “We were right,” she adds.

Another notable issue concerns the question of euthanasia. It’s impossible not to be moved by a plea to end someone’s suffering – but the arguments against assisted suicide are ultimately more compelling, says Dr. Margaret Somerville.

There is good news. Things that happen do not have to discourage us. The most important thing to remember is that change is not effected by might or power, but by God’s Spirit. Nothing is impossible to God! And nothing is impossible to the Body of Christ in Canada when we pray in unity.

These are informative and insightful selections. We welcome you to read them and to scroll down for additional ones.
