An Evangelical? Doesn't everyone want to be one?

On the one side, Anabaptists, on the other, Evangelicals. Can the two merge? This is a question Dr. Nelson Kraybill, president of Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary, Elkhart, Indiana, asks this week in his article, Is Our Future Evangelical? In this insightful look at what it takes for denominations to embrace each other, he compares Evangelical and Anabaptist strengths (and some of their shortcomings!).

And here's a real-life example of how two streams within the Body of Christ can merge. In a unique, inner-city approach to ministry, The Salvation Army and the Mennonite Brethren (MB) have blended their resources in the heart of Toronto to make a positive difference in the lives of St. Jamestown residents. According to MB pastor Kevin Bishop, "We have resources and people, but we don't have experience; that's why teaming up with The Salvation Army seemed like the obvious thing to do."

What else is new in church news this week? As you enter your church doors, in the very near future, you may meet a debit machine alongside the greeter. Apparently, Evangelical churches in Alberta's capital are following the cashless society trend by installing debit machines—the collection plates of the 21st Century—in their foyers.

Also this week, news from Britain: British Airways has lifted their religious symbols ban. After a massive row over the airline's decision to forbid a check-in worker from wearing a cross, the airline announced that "symbols of faith" can be worn openly.

And here's a word of encouragement. Mothers, are you disheartened by a less than perfect mother-daughter relationship? Take heart. You can turn things around, says journalist Patricia Paddey. She concludes, "There's no way to be a perfect parent, but a million ways to be a really good one."

Please enjoy this week's line-up. You'll be informed or inspired by the articles.
