Slavery, Civil Rights and Unity in the Church

Do slavery and civil rights have anything to do with Canada? A new documentary examines Church history: a producer investigates the story of the black Church in Canada. The film, Seeking Salvation, looks at how the Church has been a force of both liberation and oppression for black Canadians (see the article, Seeking Salvation Brings African-Canadian History to Film).

But today the Church is hearing the call to unity. Jesus prayed that we may be "one" (see John 17:23) so that the world might know Him, not by might, nor by power, but by His Spirit. Canada witnessed a seed for unity planted this summer at the One Heart Watchmen Gathering in Quebec City (see One Heart Watchmen Gathering in Quebec City). What happens when churches in an area come together in unity? For an outstanding example see the story titled "Angel Booths" Outreach Sees 2,500 Saved in Edmonton. Also, for more on the importance of unity within the Church, please see the related article on the homepage, Unity that Brings Authority.

Persecution. It happens when believers are perceived to be a threat to the prevailing order. What do you think of when you hear the word? The author of Blessed are the Persecuted looks at some possible answers to this, and other questions about persecution. Also, how does God view the severe persecution that comes against believers who defend their faith in many countries around the world where Christianity is repressed? See the article, The Mind of Man or the Mind of God? for a different perspective.

Among some significant news articles this week, look at B.C. Schools Called Discriminatory and Abortion: Where Do We Draw the Line? and lift these issues up in prayer.

Have a good week.

Blessings in Christ,
