Looking Ahead, I Press On Toward the Goal

Happy 2006! It's hard to believe, but we are already looking back at the 2005 Christmas season. For a whimsical look at one family's Christmas celebration, see Patrycja Romanowska's recollections of the recent Christmas past in her article titled The Seven Days of My Family Christmas. Sadly, for some, Christmas can be quite different. Incorporating one of her own Christmas experiences, Lorna Dueck shares insights into the welfare of 300,000 Canadian children who suffer serious abuse (see For Some, Noel Is About Cash; For Others, a Crèche).

But how did the family fare generally in 2005? Focus on the Family has reviewed the year and has highlighted developments that have affected Canadian families in 2005 (see 2005 Year in Review). The outcome of one of those developments—the recent Supreme Court decision to legalize group sex at swingers' clubs—could have repercussions on our young people, aged 14 years and more. Janet Epp Buckingham takes a thoughtful look at this decision in her article, The Supreme Court's Swingers Decision Strips Away Community Values.

For another redemptive look at a serious problem, read Father Raymond J. de Souza's article, We Need a "Toronto Miracle" (see also the related article, The Man Behind the "Boston Miracle"). Training and jobs alone won't reduce the formation of gangs that kill the innocent in downtown gun battles. Action in combating gang culture must come from within the communities from which young men are drawn into gangs, he says.

More on miracles! Lois Sweet, associate professor of journalism, submitted her grandfather's personal account of a powerful healing he experienced through prayer (see Healed in Answer to Prayer). Read it and be encouraged that the Jesus of the Bible healed everyone who came to Him. This Jesus is far more attractive, exciting, and scandalous than the meek and mild Jesus we encounter through religion, says Bruxy Cavey (see The End of Religion).

And finally, It's Election Time and You Can Make a Difference! Go out and vote! Did you know that the lives of each of the three main political party leaders in Canada are informed by faith in some way (see God's Place in the Hearts of Canadian Leaders)?

May each of us discern and fulfill God's purpose for our lives this year!

Blessings,
