Discover the mission or die

Would you pray in public for people to be healed and expect God to answer? That's what a young Sarnia, Ontario, teen did as soon as he came to know the Lord. Crowds gathered, and young people received healing—until he was suspended from school! See the story below that appeared in the Sarnia Observer recently under the headline "Faith Healer" Sent Home.

Also, just recently three Barrie, Ontario, teens flew to Angola on a mission trip with Aviation Mission Fellowship and loved it! Fifteen-year-old Joe says the greatest life lesson he learned at Mukwando was how to trust in God (see below, Water for Mukwando). Ever considered missions? Unique options for mission abound (see below, Off the Beaten Track), and you don't need years of Bible college training to qualify.

The heart of God is to share the revelation of Christ with a lost world through the local church. But in Western countries outreach and mission are not necessarily the heart of the local church. The author of Without Mission There Is No Church says, "Discover mission or die." He points out that church "growth" in the West often is the result of "people floating from one church to another, not new souls coming to Christ." But, "the church exists by mission as fire exists by burning," or else, "when God tests the church with fire from heaven, all that wood, hay, and stucco will be burned up!"

The participation of churches in politics is also part of their mission, but their engagement must be within a broader mandate under the sovereignty of God and the lordship of Christ, says the EFC's president Bruce Clemenger (see below, Of Church, State, and the Political Engagement of Evangelicals). But can there be "co-operation" between church and state? We needn't even go that far, says the author of The Porous Line Between Church and State. It would be a step forward simply to recognize that religious believers are as much Canadian citizens as are secularists (see below).

Please enjoy these, and other great selections below. Have a good week!
