What Is A Christian?

At we received a question this week from a reader asking what is a real Christian? The immediate answer, just like Gary Moore (director of the Worldwide Church of God in Canada) says, is so simple it can escape us. For the outward expression of that answer to be manifest in Christlikeness however, is a life-long undertaking.

A Christian life lived honouring to God reflects love, grace, purity, kindness and truth in word and deed. A Vancouver artist captures the beauty of creation and blends it with the beauty of a life lived in service to others. Her gift spills over into all areas of her life as she lives out one of her favourite Scripture verse: "Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms" (1 Peter 4:10).

One of the greatest hindrances to our Christian walk is fear of what others may think of things we do. In an illustration from her own life, author Marcia Laycock muses about that difficulty.  Life is too short to live it by other people’s opinions, she concludes.

How, then, does faith get formed so that our lives take on Christlikeness? One thing is certain. We can’t seem to do it on our own. Pastor Phil Reinders offers a lesson in Spiritual Disciplines 101. For spiritual growth to take place, he says, God’s grace and our effort must go hand in hand.

In the news this week, an interesting discovery concerning faith. Researchers who conducted a study on spirituality in childhood concluded, to their own amazement, that an "inner belief system" is very significant to the average child's sense of contentment and overall happiness. Sheila Wray Gregoire highlights the importance of a spiritual foundation for teenagers as well. “Maybe you have a child approaching a milestone – 13, 16, graduation. Why not take that opportunity to bless them and launch them well?” she asks.

And on another track, Dr. John Redekop once again offers his bi-annual favourite, an evaluation of the performance of the Harper government. This “Report Card” compares the last six months of Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s government with Canadian governments since 1950.

Please enjoy these selections and scroll down for more. Have a good week.
