BrokenOpen Announces Teen Scholarships
A theatre company specializing in training Christians is offering scholarships for a drama-intensive summer camp program to all high school students in Canada this summer.

BrokenOpen Theatre (Canada's only company of professional theatre artists specializing in training Christians) is offering two full scholarships for each of its Drama Intensives this summer. Scholarships are open to all high school students in Canada. BrokenOpen's vision is to be a catalyst for Christians engaging their culture. To fulfill this vision, BrokenOpen seeks to equip, encourage, and challenge our best and brightest emerging performers.

Candidates are asked to write, memorize and perform a 1-2 minute monologue and post it on BrokenOpen's Facebook page. Deadline is May 19th, 2008.

In the drama intensive program, aspiring young actors are introduced to acting techniques and exercises used by working professionals. Students learn voice, movement, acting, improvisation and stage combat during intensive workshops specifically geared to teens considering careers in film, television, and stage.

Eight different churches have committed to hosting BrokenOpen for a week. Two classes of different age brackets run simultaneously; 9-12 year olds (classes limited to 20 students), and 13-19 year olds (classes limited to 12). BrokenOpen's camps are unique. Hundreds of camps dedicated to drama are held across the country each summer. A handful of these incorporate training with Christian faith, but BrokenOpen runs the only camp-based training on a professional mentorship model. Students learn alongside working actors who guide them through the pitfalls and challenges of being a Christian in the performing arts.

"Drama is a blast!" says Richard Peters, head instructor of the program. "The youth workshops are pretty much fun and games, and most don't even know they're learning while they play. It's a great way for kids to come out of their shell, and have a lot of fun in the process. The teen workshops are fun too, but if fun is the only reason teens are there, they're in the wrong workshop. Teen workshops are filled with kids who are going to take their culture by storm. They already have a pretty good idea that drama isn't just their passion… but their calling."

"These kids will be on the frontlines of our secular culture. I can't count how many times I've heard Christians bemoan how fallen our culture has become; but we have to step back and acknowledge that we have been part of the problem, because we've opted out of the conversation! Our aim is to be part of the solution."

BrokenOpen's goal is to have trained over a thousand students through their summer intensives by 2012. "Imagine the impact of hundreds of writers, actors and directors spreading messages of hope, love, reconciliation, justice and their faith in Jesus Christ."

"I'm excited to get to work with these kids though the workshops, but I'm even more excited to think about working with them out in the profession!"

Since its inception in 2003, BrokenOpen Theatre has taught thousands of Christians from budding actors to pastors who've ministered for decades. They have taught in Christian high schools and Universities, home-school groups and churches of most mainline denominations across the country.
