2007 Alpha Invitation … Expect Changed Lives!

Alpha's 2007 billboard campaign centres around the question "Is there more to life than this?"

Jennifer Perry, a woman aged about 20 is fairly typical of many young people on Alpha. She was there only because someone had invited her and intended to go just for the one night. But it was like somebody was finally speaking truth into her life for the first time. And then came her searching question … "Why has no one ever told me this before?"

… churches right across Canada will be coming together this summer to get the invitation out …

Many people who at first appear disinterested or even hostile to faith nevertheless ask similar questions once truth is presented in a way they can hear and as God breaks into their lives. Mikal Schomburg a young man form London, Ontario, was very anti-Christian and when his wife took Alpha he thought, "That has nothing to do with me." Months later he did attend, had a very powerful encounter with God and now administers the Alpha course at his church.

Before attending Alpha, Chris Horne says she "thought we were alone in the universe." Now that she has come to faith in Jesus she acknowledges, "I was incredibly wrong."

A friend invited Adam Duguay to Alpha. "I was drinking five nights a week and taking drugs," he recalls. On the retreat weekend Adam had such a powerful experience of God that he suddenly began to weep uncontrollably, left the main room and went into the lobby to lie down on the couch by himself. As he gazed up at the ceiling he remembers feeling an incredible sense of peace and "everything was right with the universe for the first time."

Chief Candice Paul is one of only two women First Nations Chiefs in Canada. She was invited to attend Alpha in Fredericton at the home of a friend. Many in the First Nations Community have rejected Christianity. "As a First Nations person," says the Chief, "I could relate to Alpha. It's laidback, open, like a celebration." Candice had her own encounter with God at Alpha. "Something opened up for me and I felt such relief, such joy." She believes Alpha "really needs to get out into the First Nations community." "I know their lives will be changed," she says.

Most people come to Alpha because of a personal invitation. And to make it easier for people to invite their friends, family members, co-workers and neighbours to an Alpha course, churches right across Canada will be coming together this summer to get the invitation out, supported by a national campaign of billboard and transit shelter and bus advertising that will run throughout August in support of fall Alpha courses.

The campaign, funded by a generous grant from the Jim Pattison Foundation, centres around the question "Is there more to life than this?"

For some, seeing a banner on a billboard or church with a poignant question such as this may be all the prompting needed. Anne Campbell had grown up in a non-Christian home and had "never practiced faith" of any kind. Due to ill health, Anne was on her "own journey of wellness" which led her to notice the Alpha sign on a church in Halifax, Nova Scotia as she drove by. Intrigued by the words "An opportunity to explore the meaning of life", Anne ventured into the church. "I didn't know what to ask, I was nervous, I was scared, but I kept going back."

"I was lost," she says. "Everything always seemed to be a struggle. But now, having that relationship with God and Jesus has turned my whole life around."
