Church Sanctuaries Harbour Much "Invisible Pain"
Every Sunday the sanctuary becomes a very disturbing place where very real dramas of life and death are taking place.

This letter is a response to the article, Streets of Mercy.

I found myself reacting to the implication in the article that people working, for example, as paramedics are working in the "real" world of pain, drama etc. whereas people who congregate in the "safety of the sanctuary"
are in a different world quite removed from the 'real' action.

I think many church sanctuaries can be likened to the action taking place in the back of an ambulance …

Every Sunday the sanctuary, at least for me, becomes a very disturbing place where people are confronted with their sin, their own pain of conscience, the disturbing message to follow Christ in lowly service and mission. I believe the 'invisible' pain and drama which take place in the human heart and mind are comparable to the physical pain where physical trauma has occurred. I thought it unfortunate that the writer felt led to make such a distinction.

I think many church sanctuaries can be likened to the action taking place in the back of an ambulance where a fight is going on for the soul of a person, where there is the need for "paddling" (a sudden jolt to get the heart started again); the need for stopping the bleeding emotional and spiritual; the need to immobilize where anger and rage are out of control; the list could go on. I do believe that behind the music the furnishings of the sanctuary, nevertheless, very real dramas of life and death are taking place.
