Bio:

Since graduation from the Ontario College of Art, Bruce has been a practicing visual artist and instructor for over 35 years. His life's journey as an artist is reflected within the context of the work. These are expressions of life…its deserts…its mirages…its oases.

Inspiration for the work comes from reflecting upon the discrepancies in today's contemporary society and the Lord's plan of redemption. We live an historical past. Wars, rumours of wars, compromised politics and social injustice plague the world. The world, as it continues to grope for answers, cannot find them. Bruce has a sensitivity to those who suffer, those who are most vulnerable and the least able to defend themselves.

Scripture reflects the basis of evil within the human heart and our continual opposition to the beauty of God's creative plan. The Word also demonstrates the redemptive power of a mighty Saviour, in whose plan of grace, is comfort in the storms of life, ultimate forgiveness and total restoration within Jesus Christ's redemptive love.

In working as a visual artist Bruce has found himself consistently challenged and assaulted by his own inconsistent behaviour. It is a continuing struggle to be aware of Christ's reality. Yet Bruce knows that his calling as a visual artist is to be used to demonstrate the goal of Christ's redemptive spirit in a tumultuous world. This is the mission through which he must run the race.

Observing the outward as a reflection of the reality within is critical for the artist. Christ admonishes us to "Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, neither do they reap … Nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them… .Observe how the lilies of the field grow … even Solomon in all his glory did not clothe himself like one of these" (Matt. 6:26,28,29). He speaks to us through all of His creation.

God is an eternally creative God, who has also created us to be creative.

Contemplation is vital to the creative process. As creative beings, it is critical to have a sense and awareness of what is creative and to express our lives as full of meaning. The working out of visual art is a solitary experience. The creative process receives inspiration through being still before the Lord and waiting patiently for Him.

• Lord what now?
• What lesson?
• What fruit?

The creative expression of all facets of the arts is yet to be fully embraced in the 21st century Church. The Body needs to experience the power and beauty of expression within the arts. The full manifestation of the arts within worship is a creative expression of the vitality of God with us. Bruce suggests that the Church does not have a "corner" on God's Holy Spirit. That the God of creativity uses many different people, events and forms of expression to speak the Truth.

God is perfect and calls us as artists to a constant pursuit and development of excellence. It is incumbent upon the creative artist to know and understand the tools, materials, and significance of every facet of the creative process. This is a privileged Gift. The artist's work becomes a thread within history's tapestry woven since the ancient of times.

This is the artist's discipline. This is the artist's life. This is the artist's way.
