Spotlight on Canadian Music Shines in Alberta

The Canadian Christian music is celebrating two prominent awards evenings this winter: the fan-oriented Shai Awards and the industry-oriented Covenant Awards.

Christian songwriters and musicians are celebrating continuing growth in their industry at two prominent awards evenings this winter: the fan-oriented Shai Awards and the industry-oriented Covenant Awards.

Shai Awards

Organizers of the Shai Awards are back from a one-year hiatus with a renewed program thanks to a new partnership with Break Forth Canada. Break Forth is one of the country's largest annual Christian events. The Shai Awards are set for January 25 in Edmonton and will be followed by Break Forth 2007, a three-day worship conference expected to draw more than 10,000 participants from around the world.

Fans can vote for their favourites starting December 12 at www.shaiawards.com.

The 28th Annual Covenant Awards recognized singer-songwriter Ali Matthews with a pack-leading 11 nominations. Other multiple nominees for the awards handed out October 27th in Calgary included: Chris Janz and Downhere, with six nominations each, followed by five nominations each for Starfield, Carolyn Arends, Steve Bell, N.I.F.T.Y. and The Silent. Brian Doerksen and Ron Ennig each earned four nominations.
